A David Bowie film with thousands of hours of rare footage is on its way

A source close to the project describes it as ‘neither documentary nor biography, but an immersive cinematic experience built, in part, upon thousands of hours of never before seen material’

A top secret David Bowie film is officially in the works. Directed by Brett Morgan, the film will include thousands of hours of rarely seen concert and performance footage.

According to Variety, the filmmaker has been working on the film – whose name is currently undisclosed – for four years. A source close to the project describes it as “neither documentary nor biography, but an immersive cinematic experience built, in part, upon thousands of hours of never before seen material”.

There hasn’t been a lot of information disclosed about the project so far, but sources hint at a Sundance Film Festival premiere in January, 2022 – six years after the late icon’s death.

Elsewhere, the artist’s long-lost 2001 album Toy is getting an official release on November 26 – two decades after it was originally intended to hit shelves. The album will feature as part of a new box set, David Bowie 5: Brilliant Adventure (1992–2001).

Back in May, a selection of Bowie’s non-album singles, new remixes, and sessions from BBC In Concert were released under the title The Width of a Circle.
