Released on Pentatone, whose catalogue includes Beethoven and Bach, the album is classical at heart. But electronic soundscapes and hypnotising vocals (courtesy of Charlotte Church and London grime MC Jawnino) give it an experimental edge. Described by poet and critic Fred Moten, who wrote the introduction to the album, as “a soundtrack of epic revolt against beginnings and ends”, Klein transports us into a mesmerising dream-world reality. Jazz-inspired piano improvisations are juxtaposed with ominous brass tones and organ arrangements that wash across the tracks like a cool breeze; a common thread that pulls the album together. Never one to skimp out on the details, Klein’s Harmattan is a rich record and an accumulation of Klein’s commitment to disruptive, boundary-pushing sounds. Elsewhere, Clams Casino shares a new project, Jessy Lanza takes over the latest DJ-Kicks mix, and Infinite Coles drops a mesmerising debut.
