FKA twigs has directed a vibrant skateboarding dance video

‘As a movement artist and obsessor myself, I felt humbled by the skill levels and beautiful athletes that I shot,’ twigs said

This year, skateboarding is an official competition at the Olympics, and we’re already obsessed with 13-year-old Momiji Nishiya from Japan who is the first ever woman to win gold at the Games. In honour of the sport being played at the event for the first time, FKA twigs has directed a new video about longboarding, a close companion to its short deck cousin.

Ever seen someone pirouetting on a board? Us neither – until now. Longboard Family is a two-minute film that looks at a community of dancers who ride gracefully on their wheels while performing twirls and tricks in unison. Set to the soundtrack of Brent Faiyaz’s “Dead Man Walking”, it features longboard champions Aboubakry SeckGiu AlfeoMarina Correia, and Brandon DesJarlais.

“It was so amazing being immersed into their world and as a movement artist and obsessor myself, I felt humbled by the skill levels and beautiful athletes that I shot,” twigs wrote on Instagram of the video, produced for Facebook.

It’s not the first time that twigs has been sat in the director’s chair, having helmed many of her own videos, including “Don’t Judge Me” and “Holy Terrain”. Two weeks ago marked the first time she has done so for another artist, after her collaborator Koreless shared a video featuring fishing, Lamborghinis, and feral ravers for his track “White Picket Fence”.

And there are more visual offerings from twigs on the way: recently, Michaela Coel revealed that the singer, dancer, and producer is working on a martial arts TV series.
