Miley Cyrus has shared her much-teased cover of Metallica’s track “Nothing Else Matters”, in collaboration with an eclectic mix of featured musicians, from Elton John and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, to Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Metallica’s own Robert Trujillo.
The star-studded rendition of the track offers a sneak peek at the The Metallica Blacklist, an upcoming tribute record set to arrive alongside a remastered version of the band’s self-titled fifth studio album (AKA The Black Album). In total, 53 artists have contributed versions of iconic Metallica tracks for the covers album.
“With contributions from countries all over the globe, from the US to Nigeria, there are tracks from singer-songwriters, country artists, electronic, and hip-hop artists,” explains the band in a statement posted to its website. “Alongside punk rockers, indie darlings, icons of rock, metal, world music, and many, many more, covering the entire spectrum from musicians we’ve shared the stage with, to some who were not even born yet when the original album was released!”
Other notable names joining the queen of cover songs on the reworked record include Rina Sawayama, Mac DeMarco, Weezer, St. Vincent, Moses Sumney, J Balvin, Phoebe Bridgers, IDLES, and Kamasi Washington.
“Honoured to be in company of some of the greatest to ever do it,” writes Cyrus, sharing the first cover to social media.
Both Metallica’s Black Album reissue and the wide-ranging covers album are set to arrive on September 10, via its label, Blackened Recordings. 100 per cent of the profits from the Metallica Blacklist will go to charity, with half going directly to Metallica’s All Within My Hands foundation.
