Back in the summer of 2019, A$AP Rocky was arrested and charged with assault in Stockholm, Sweden, and now the rapper is set to share a documentary about the time he spent in Swedish jail. Titled Stockholm Syndrome, and directed by the filmmaking collective The Architects, the documentary will premiere at Tribeca Film Festival on June 13.
According to the film festival’s description, it will chart the artist’s “meteoric rise… before taking a detour into darkness”. Combining archival film, contemporary interviews, animation, and live concert footage, it also promises appearances from Kim Kardashian, Naomi Campbell, Tyler, the Creator, Michèle Lamy, and A$AP Ferg.
Kardashian, Tyler, the Creator, and Campbell were just some of the high-profile figures that vocally advocated Rocky’s release in 2019 (also including Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, and – in a pretty blatant publicity move – Donald Trump).
In case you missed it the first time, Rocky was initially detained alongside two of his crew following a violent altercation with two men, who allegedly followed them and instigated the brawl. In the meantime, he released video footage that appeared to support his claims of self-defence. He eventually ended up leaving Swedish custody in August 2019, following the widespread #FreeRocky campaign.
Besides working on the documentary, the musician has maintained close ties to the prison in which he was held, designing uniforms for the institution, and announcing plans to perform for the inmates on his return in December 2019 (though his request was later denied, meaning he swapped out the show for a caged arena performance).
Stockholm Syndrome will premiere at Tribeca Film Festival as part of its Juneteenth programming on July 13, and you can buy tickets to stream it in the US from July 14 onwards, here.
