A collection of SOPHIE’s friends and collaborators in the US have launched an art auction and print sale in memory of the pioneering musician, titled God Is Trans.
“We have organized this online auction and sale of editions to honour her radical generosity, artistic vision, and commitment to supporting the trans* community,” say the organisers, in a statement on the God Is Trans website.
The sale includes artworks from the likes of Nick Harwood (director of the stunning video for “It’s Okay To Cry”), Renata Raksha, Emily Schubert, and Nichole Fitch, as well as a white silk Eckhaus Latta dress modelled by SOPHIE for AW18.
100 per cent of the proceeds will go toward the Trans Justice Funding Project. The organisation directly funds grassroots trans justice groups across the US, distributing more than $4.5 million in unrestricted grants to “projects combating racism, economic injustice, transmisogyny, ableism, incarceration, and other intersecting oppressions” since it was founded in 2012.
Other friends and collaborators have paid tribute separately since the 34-year-old producer died from a sudden fall in January this year. In February, Charli XCX wrote of her “special connection” to the artist on social media, while A. G. Cook shared a touching tribute in her memory last month.
In March, a new SOPHIE track with Jlin — “JSLOIPHNIE” — was posthumously released as part of a compilation by Unsound Festival, followed by two tracks with the Miami duo Basside.
