Following the announcement of her upcoming album, seemingly titled Daddy’s Home, in a poster campaign last week, St. Vincent has shared a glimpse of a new track titled “Pay Your Way In Pain” via a trailer and accompanying hotline.
In a video posted to social media March 2, the musician – real name Annie Clark – hurries through a drab hallway, wearing a trench coat and carrying her heels. She’s urged on by a ringing telephone. Once she finds it and answers, a man’s voice responds, simply saying: “Hello, Annie.” Cue: a snippet of music, which it’s safe to assume is lifted from the upcoming song, and instructions to call a phone line ending in “DADDY”.
Calling the hotline offers a crackly preview of the new single, alongside the man’s voice, which teases Clark’s return “in a new role like you’ve never seen her before”.
No release date has yet been revealed for “Pay Your Way In Pain”, which is thought to be produced by her MASSEDUCTION collaborator Jack Antonoff. Last month’s poster campaign did appear to reveal the full record’s release date, however, stating that it will be available May 14.
In a recent interview with the music newsletter The New Cue, Clark describes the album as: “the sound of being down and out Downtown in New York, 1973. Glamour that hasn’t slept for three days.” Take a look at what to expect in the video below.
