FKA twigs is working on a martial arts TV show

‘It’s like a martial arts TV series which is very much centred around outsiders’

FKA twigs has announced that she’s working on her first TV series, a martial arts-based show for FX. “It’s like a martial arts TV series which is very much centred around outsiders,” twigs explains, in a new interview with Michaela Coel for The Face. “And the idea of wanting to fit in but not being able to.”

“I’ve been putting a lot of research into the way that the Black community and the Chinese martial arts community have a really deep connection,” she continues. “It goes into music: the Wu-Tang Clan came together almost through martial arts.”

FKA twigs has also incorporated martial arts into her own music in recent years, having trained in wushu, a form of contemporary Chinese martial arts. The singer has also integrated swordplay into her MAGDALENE performances, as well as the Hiro Murai-directed video for “sad day”.

The recent interview also sees twigs open up about her abuse allegations against Shia LaBeouf. “I felt like I was holding on to somebody else’s dysfunction,” she says, of the period before the allegations were out in the open. “And now I feel like I’ve given it back to him. It’s his to hold and rightly so.” Earlier this month, she also spoke out about their relationship in a TV interview, claiming: “It’s a miracle I came out alive.”

In January, meanwhile, FKA twigs premiered the video for a new song with Headie One and Fred Again, titled “Don’t Judge Me”. The visuals feature appearances from Munroe Bergdorf, Clara Amfo, Reni Eddo-Lodge, and more, revolving around Kara Walker’s momentous Tate installation, Fons Americanus.
