The short film, which was “co-conceived” by twigs and Murai, features the singer sword fight through the streets of her hometown London alongside co-star Teake. It’s partially inspired by a lyric from MAGDALENE track “home with you” – “never seen a hero like me in a sci-fi” – and sees FKA twigs “becoming the hero she wanted to see growing up but never saw in mainstream cinema”, according to a press release. The video comes three years since twigs began training in wushu, a form of contemporary Chinese martial arts, under the guidance of Master Wu of the Shaolin Wushu Centre. Last year, the singer tweeted an open call, looking for POC men trained in wushu to feature in the video. “Everything I’ve previously done with my body, all the training and dancing, has led to this point,” she said in a statement.
