2020 has brought its fair share of trauma and uncertainty, but there’s one thing we can always rely on, year after year: Barack Obama’s “Songs of the Year” playlist. As per usual, this year’s list features a fairly varied selection, including tracks by Megan Thee Stallion, Phoebe Bridgers, and Bob Dylan.
Dua Lipa, Jhené Aiko, Travis Scott, J Hus, Wizkid, Mac Miller, Waxahatchee, and more were also namechecked in the 2020 review.
A stamp of approval from a former president is probably considered a pretty good indicator that you’ve blown up over the last year, and accordingly Megan The Stallion responded to Obama’s list on Twitter, writing: “Real Presidential sh**!”
The rapper was specifically recognised for her “Savage” remix, featuring Beyoncé, while Phoebe Bridgers’ “Kyoto” was singled out as a presidential favourite. Proving Obama’s good taste, “Savage” was also one of Dazed’s favourite tracks of 2020, while Bridgers discussed her “Kyoto”-featuring album, Punisher, in a recent interview.
That only leaves one question: where, exactly, is Cardi B’s pandemic masterpiece, “WAP”?
