The Plastic Hearts singer appeared on Billy Idol’s forthcoming SiriusXM radio special, where she recalled being called out by Cher after her performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. “I had Cher come after me,” Cyrus explained. “That’s when I thought I had really made it. I’m like, ‘Oh, Cher gives a fuck about what I’m doing!’ She was mad that I was sticking my tongue out all the time, and all that shit.” She added: “And I’m like, ‘Yo, I pissed Cher off, I really made it!’ That’s what I mean. When these legends, and these icons, and these artists that we look up to… when they, you know, fucking hate us, it’s still a compliment.” Cyrus’ performance of "We Can't Stop" and "Blurred Lines" with Robin Thicke went down in VMA history as one of the most infamous performances ever due to Miley's nude bikini, foam finger, and onstage twerking. “I’m not old-fashioned,” Cher said at the time. “She could have come out naked, and if she’d just rocked the house, I would have said, ‘You go, girl.’ It just wasn’t done well. She can’t dance, her body looked like hell, the song wasn’t great, one cheek was hanging out. And, chick, don’t stick out your tongue if it’s coated.” Since then, Cyrus has opened up about her experience of the media during that time. Earlier this month, she said that she has “trauma” from being criticised about her sexuality by the media at an early age. She also reshared that infamous video of her smoking a bong with friends to celebrate its 10th anniversary. “Happy 10 year anniversary to the groundbreaking video of a teenager smoking a bong and saying dumb shit to their friends,” Cyrus wrote in the caption to her recent post. “Not sure the director of this fine film should be considered a ‘friend’ but… time really flew by. I remember this like it was yesterday... J/K I don’t remember shit cause I was fucked the hell up.” Watch the infamous performance below. Escape the algorithm!
