The 40-track fundraiser compilation album will benefit US voters’ rights organisation Fair Fight
A mammoth fundraiser compilation album to benefit a voters’ rights organisation in the US will feature previously unreleased and new music from musicians including Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Death Cab for Cutie, Phoebe Bridgers, Soccer Mommy, Angel Olsen, and more.
Good Music to Avert the Collapse of American Democracy includes 40 tracks from an array of artists, also featuring R.E.M, Sudan Archives, Tegan & Sara, and Weyes Blood. It’s a mix of covers, unreleased music, demos, and live recordings. The record will be available for 24 hours on Bandcamp today (Friday September 4), as part of the platform’s Bandcamp Fridays initiative.
It’s been orchestrated and produced by The Circle author David Eggers, Josh Rosenfeld, Jordan Kurland, Darius Zelkha, and Christian Stavros.
All of the net sales will go to Fair Fight, a voting rights non profit organisation in the United States. Fair Fight, founded in Georgia, aims to encourage voter participation in elections all around the US and ensure fair election runs.
In a statement, Eggers said: “It’s going to come down to bringing out and protecting the vote this fall, so the work Fair Fight does is crucial.
“Jordan and I figured a painless way to raise some money would be to ask musicians to donate unreleased tracks, people pay a few bucks for them, and maybe we can edge toward a functioning democracy again.“
The cover art was created by artist Shepard Fairey, who created the iconic poster design for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. A limited-edition signed artwork poster will also be sold today on Bandcamp, with proceeds going to racial justice organisation, Color of Change.
Across the large compilation includes a haunting Weyes Blood cover of Joni Mitchell’s “River“, and a 1989 live recording of “Begin The Begin“ by R.E.M. Tegan & Sara share a demo “God Help Yourself“ and Phoebe Bridgers shares a voice memo of “Chinese Satellite“.
