Since 2013, she’s had a close working relationship with Ariana Grande, collaborating with the musician as a songwriter on hits like “thank u, next” and “7 rings” (she’s also worked with Fifth Harmony, Chloe x Halle, Brandy, and more). Though she’s been releasing solo music during that time, JAGUAR is Monét’s first full-length solo project, and the first opportunity to define her artistry on its own terms. The record is a little more low-key than Monét’s hitmaking history might suggest. With the exception of the dancefloor-ready rhythms “Experience”, which features Khalid and SG Lewis, most of the record unfolds at a slower pace, luxuriating in its live instrumentation, Monét’s distinctive vocal melodies and cadence, and her refined R&B vision. Elsewhere this week, Popcaan releases his Fixtape mixtape with Drake’s OVO Sound label, Hudson Mohawke digs into his archives with B.B.H.E., and the Paul Institute come together on a group compilation.
