Fellow Philadelphian Ted Passon directs Dopeness, as a member of the Space1026 art collective and co-founder of the Small Change experimental film screening series he's previously directed videos for Sweatheart, a documentary on Plastic Little and has produced promos the Peggy Honeywell project, the musical platform for Barry McGee's wife, artist Clare Rojas. Plastic Little MC Jayson Musson talks to Dazed & Confused about the video's spectacularly surreal moments, which include a rapping new-born, choreographed candy coloured strippers and hypercoloured hospitals. D&C: Who came up with the treatment? I wrote the original treatment. Jayson Musson. D&C: How was it working with Ted Passon – have you guys done projects before? Working with Ted was amazing. He took that treatment and added so much amazing shit like the musical aspect, the self-birth aspect and the steady cam idea for a long continuous shot. Prior to this, Ted shot "Remix To The Remix", a documentary on Plastic Little for Current TV. D&C: It's been described as the performance art of Mathew Barney Vs the humour of Mel Brooks. Can you expand on this? Our friend Max from Free News Projects wrote that, and I don't think it has anything to do with Mathew Barney or Mel Brooks. The video is a musical and musicals are made to be understood in a very simple way. The video is comedic, but not hermetic and convoluted like Mathew Barney's stuff. It has nothing to do with, or is inspired by, Mathew Barney. D&C: The hypercolour kitsch of the video, that's Plastic Little all over right? That's all Ted's idea. The kid is amazing. He had his crew in the hospital painting the trim of the wing we shot in for two days. D&C: Vaginal wigs. The new accessory for Fall/Winter 2007? Don't leave home without it. You'll just get laughed at in the club. D&C: Has Kurt really been rapping since birth? Since he was a foetus. He started out as political foetus rapper but realised that party rap was waaay more fun. But he waited until birth to make the change-up so the A&Rs could market him better. D&C: How about the other Plastic Littlers? Shit, we all started in our teens. D&C: Can you talk more about "She's Mature: The Musical"? Shit. It's an idea to link up all the videos on a DVD and put a narrative to it all. But I doubt it will get done. Haha, we're lazy. D&C: I think you've proved there's beauty in everything.
