Lil Nas X says he’s ‘ready to take a little time off’

The rapper has cancelled two upcoming festivals, saying he intends to make it up to fans in some way

“It’s been a wild last 7 months,” Lil Nas X tweeted last night, in an act of massive understatement. You almost definitely know the story by now, but those last seven months have seen him shoot to fame with his country-trap hit “Old Town Road” – the song since earned the accolade of being the longest-running US number one – and the subsequent release of his debut EP, 7.

Among the media attention, the Dazed 100 rapper has also come out as gay (a significant challenge in the worlds of both country and hip hop) and spoken candidly about the backlash.

Now, though, it’s time for a rest. “im ready to take a little time off,” he continues in the tweet. “sorry to everyone attending twitchcon or the sandbox music festival, i will not be there. i love u guys and will make it up to you some way.

Obviously, it’s disappointing news for anyone attending either of these events, at which Lil Nas X was high on the billing, but it’s a refreshing change to see an artist recognise their limits, hopefully before suffering from what’s earned the generation before them the title of “the burnout generation”.

While there has been a small amount of backlash on social media, fans have overwhelmingly expressed their support and encouraged Lil Nas X to get some rest. There’s no news on what he plans to do to “make it up” to the affected fans just yet.
