Back in July, Kanye West started constructing dome-like concept homes in Calabasas, with the prototypes spread across 300 acres of West’s land. Unfortunately, the domes were reportedly in violation of building codes on account that permits were never acquired for construction, meaning they’ve had to be torn down.

Ye’s neighbours lodged multiple complaints about the building works, which reportedly took place at night and on Sundays, which goes against local building codes. The LA County Dept of Public Works had also asked West to acquire the correct property permits. Now, a week before the reported deadline of September 15, all but one of the domes has been torn down.

West told Forbes the domes would “break the barriers that separate classes... the rich, the middle class and the poor”. He explained that his designs were inspired by the dome-like buildings that exist on the fictional planet of Tattooine in Star Wars and would act as “pre-fabricated structures” that would facilitate low-income people or the homeless.

The futuristic aesthetic of the housing project recalls the unrealised custom Coachella dome-like headline stage, as well as the influence of architectural designer, long-time friend, Louis Vuitton designer, and Off-White label founder Virgil Abloh. In fact, in a 2018 interview with Charlamagne tha God, Kanye said that he was “going to be one of the biggest real-estate developers of all time”, likening himself to “what Howard Hughes was to aircrafts and what Henry Ford was to cars”.

The end may not be nigh for Yeezy’s futuristic egalitarian colony though, as Kanye has, according to reports, held investor meetings and bought a $14 million lake ranch in Wyoming with intentions to rebuild there.

Amid all this, Ye’s next album Jesus is King releases this month.
