The hip hop icon surprised fans with the release of a new, five-track EP, Iconology, produced by Missy with Timbaland and Wili Hendrix. The lead single from Iconology is “Throw it Back”, which comes accompanied by a music video co-starring Teyana Taylor. True to its name, it pays homage to the old school, featuring a posse of dancers (and yes, they do “flip it and reverse it”) and even the vintage MTV VMA Moon Man statue. The rest of the EP feels pretty classic in flavour, too – there’s even an acapella version of “Why I Still Love You?” on there – without literally sounding like it belongs in the past. “Let’s #ThrowItBack to a time when music just felt good and made us want to dance!” she wrote on Twitter on Thursday. “Let’s go sissssssssss!!!!!” added Taylor. Iconology is Missy’s first project since her 2005 studio album The Cookbook, although she has dropped some loose singles in the intervening years, including 2015’s Pharrell-featuring “WTF (Where They From)” and “I’m Better”. She’s also collaborated with Katy Perry, appearing at the Super Bowl together in 2015, and earlier this year featured on Lizzo’s “Tempo”. The reason for Elliott’s long absence has been well-documented: her struggle with the auto-immune conditon Graves’ disease. Missy is being honoured with an MTV Video Vanguard Award at Monday’s VMAs, which follows her recent induction into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame – the first female rapper to receive the honour.
