Well, maybe not, but that’s kind of how it’s turned out anyway, as the anthem of choice for opponents celebrating the collapse of Austria’s right-wing government. Just stop and take that in a moment, a brief light in the darkness of contemporary world politics. So why exactly is the Dutch pop group’s track now at number 1 in Austria’s iTunes downloads? Well, the country’s head of government Sebastian Kurz had to call a snap election after the vice chancellor, Heinz-Christian Strache – also the leader of the far-right Freedom Party, who were in coalition with Kurz’s conservatives – resigned following a video sting in, you guessed it, Ibiza. Strache was reportedly filmed offering to fix state contracts in return for favours from a woman undercover as a Russian oligarch’s niece. Nice one. It looks like he’s going to have to get used to the song ironically soundtracking his life, too. As well as hitting the top of the download charts, it was sung by a gathering of over 5000 at the Hofburg Palace (where the President lives) when Strache resigned and has also been played on TV. Hilariously, Vengaboys responded joyfully to the news and actually went to Vienna to perform hits – including the obvious one – in the city’s streets.
