Sky Ferreira is back with a new song, ‘Downhill Lullaby’

Yes, for real

Sky Ferreira is back. “Downhill Lullaby” is the first single to be released from Masochism, her long anticipated second album and the follow-up to her 2013 debut Night Time, My Time.

“Downhill Lullaby” is a subtle return from the singer, a widescreen, cinematic, and melancholic piece of songwriting in which she sings: “I know that you are / Going downhill soon.”

In a recent interview with Pitchfork, Ferreira compared making the song to a scene in Fantasia: “You know how all the brooms are making a gigantic mess and the water starts rising and rising and rising and rising?” she said. “It was sort of like that: Magical, but at the same time, ‘What is going on?’ And then cleaning it all up.” The song was produced by Dean Hurley, with co-production by Jorge Elbrecht.

Masochism has been subject to numerous delays over the years, with Ferreira instead releasing covers, collaboratiing with artists like the Jesus & Mary Chain, and acting in films like Lords of Chaos and TV shows like Twin Peaks. The album is set to arrive later this year, according to a press release, following recording sessions in Copenhagen and Los Angeles.
