Music / NewsMusic / NewsTegan & Sara are writing a tell-all memoirFull of intricate stories about their relationship as sisters and musicians, and growing up as queer girlsShareLink copied ✔️December 12, 2018December 12, 2018TextAngela Skujins For about 20 years indie-pop icons and identical twins Tegan & Sara have been grilled from all corners about their personal and professional lives, but the duo want to offer more to their complex, colourful narrative. Their debut autobiographical memoir, High School, is an answer to this and is set for release next autumn. In a statement, the sisters said the book will specifically tackle queries like: “How did you start your band? When did you know that you were gay? What were you like before Tegan and Sara?” as told to FSG. The literary release is said to be a gorgeous a coming-of-age story that gives, “the opportunity to tell the complex stories that shaped our relationship as sisters, musicians, and queer girls”. What makes it an even more interesting literary debut is that each twin will alternate between penning a chapter each. With this structure, it will offer a holistic representation of their origin stories and memories of events. Tegan & Sara are known for their rich and vulnerable lyrics that explore power, purpose and pride, so it’s no surprise they’ve decided to pick up the pen and fill things in their way. Speaking to Dazed in 2017, the Quin sisters detailed how their expansive back catalog highlights a lifetime of growth, progression and change for the better – hopefully, this is something we see more of in their memoir. “I think we defy definition,” Tegan said. “We are songwriters. We do not belong in any genre. Nor are we limited by any characterisation of ourselves. I feel we need no permission to do as we please in terms of production. The songs and the time frame dictate what happens, but any song of ours can be reinvented at any time. They are just vessels.” High School will be published by MCD at Farrar, Straus and Giroux on September 24 2019. Escape the algorithm!
