BTS smashed YouTube viewing records with their new ‘Idol’ video

With over 56 million views in 24 hours

Record-breaking is pretty much par for the course for K-Pop boy band BTS. In 2017 they were the first Korean group to make it into the US Top 30 and this year they topped the Billboard 200 album charts (another first). As of this weekend, they’ve smashed YouTube viewing records, too, with the new video to their song “Idol”.

The “Idol” music video – replete with slick choreography and bright, trippy visuals – passed 56 million views in its first 24 hours, making its debut the most watched of all time. BTS take the title off Taylor Swift, who’s 2017 “Look What You Made Me Do” video got a paltry 43.2 million views on its first day.

The band also released a special version of the song featuring a verse from Nicki Minaj yesterday (August 25), and she accordingly gave them a shoutout in an Instagram post.

Other big names to show their support include Liam Payne and Ed Sheeran, who wrote in his Instagram story that they are “about to have an incredible week”. As of writing, the video has just under 70 million views. Watch it below.
