Stormzy paid tribute to the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire at London’s Wireless festival on Saturday (July 7). He repeated his critique of the government’s response to the the fire, which he first aired at the Brit Awards in February: “Theresa May where's the money for Grenfell / What you thought we just forgot about Grenfell? / You criminals, and you got the cheek to call us savages / You should do some jail time, you should pay some damages.”
Elsewhere in the set, the grime MC led a chant of “Three Lions” just a few hours after England beat Sweden in the World Cup quarter finals. The headline performance saw the grime MC bolstered by a 40-piece orchestra, 100-foot flames, giant video screens that at one point portrayed Theresa May as The Joker, and guest appearances from Ghetts and Krept & Konan, NME report.
“LONDON MY FUCKING CITY,” Stormzy wrote on Instagram after the performance. “I LOVE YOU, THANK YOU FOR MAKING ME”.
Wireless was an eventful weekend – Madonna was seen from the side of the stage during Migos’s performance on Saturday, while on Sunday (July 8), Drake made a surprise appearance to play some tracks from his new album Scorpion, including “God’s Plan” and “I’m Upset”. His 20-minute set replaced headliner DJ Khaled, who failed to show due to “travel issues” (despite photographing himself in a pool with the caption “still on vacation”).
