Wolfhard announced last year that Calpurnia had signed a record deal with ParadYse/Transgressive Records (UK) and Royal Mountain Records (US – roster mates include Alvvays and Mac Demarco), and today via the band’s Instagram they released their first track “City Boy”. It’s a super impressive production, and that’s no surprise after their incredible cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Here She Comes Now” live in New York earlier this year. The song plays out with upbeat vocals and garage-rock guitar vibes – you can clearly hear the band’s influences which range from Mac DeMarco – who Wolfhard has previously rocked out with on stage – to 90s Nirvana-esque grunge and bluesy Rolling Stones. The lyrics are pretty catchy and cute. The music video for the track, which was also just released on the band’s Instagram, shows the group goofing around with each other and their instruments with technicolour animations. The group are also reportedly working on their debut EP with Twin Peaks frontman Caiden Lake James right now, so stay tuned for more bops. Listen to “City Boy” here, and watch the video below.
