In the second season of the drag queen competition’s All Stars selection, Katya did her best impression of the Utopia singer, and during a later Reddit AMA Björk spoke about how flattered she was. More parallels between the Icelandic singer and the drag queens of RuPaul have been drawn since the release of her ninth studio album. Speaking on the Beats 1 radio show, she was asked whether her song “Sue Me” was inspired by queen Nina Bo’Nina Brown. Brown had competed in season nine of the show, and in her fifth week exit she left with a final farewell: “sue me,” she said, before strutting out. “You will not believe this, but the Nina Bo’Nina reference was after. It’s some zeitgeist,” Björk said. “Yeah, it was meant to be. I wrote the song before it happened. Maybe I should ask her to do a remix or something.” The musician also talked about her shared love of the show with her daughter. “We still remember all of the (Season 9) queens’ names by heart,” she said. “We got drag fever and there were a lot of wigs and makeup going on in our house.” Brown was praised on the show for her avant-animal, paper mache looks. Björk, of course, is queen of the boundary-pushing extra-terrestrial aesthetic. Read back on our interview with the embroidery artist behind her most stunning lace and pearl masks, James Merry, here.
