This includes tracks from the episode, inspirations, and songs that couldn’t be used for copyright reasons. In keeping with the episode’s 80s theme, the playlist includes tracks from the likes of Madonna, The Smiths, Beastie Boys, and Public Enemy. In an interview with Vogue, Brooker claimed that the reasoning behind the episode’s setting was the aspect of nostalgia: “All the music I said I hated, I secretly loved all of it... It was a great way for me to indulge in all those guilty pleasures. To go back and revisit all of that music people claimed to hate in 1987.” ‘San Junipero’ stars Mackenzie Davis and Gugu Mbatha-Raw and is, in his words, “an 80s coming-of-age drama with a Black Mirror undertow”. Speaking to Dazed recently, he said that the episode was “the first one I wrote for this season, and I didn’t want it to constantly be ‘the bleak show’ – like, someone’s life is ruined, so let’s wait and find out how. It’s to keep the viewers on their toes. I didn’t want it to just be the negative technology show.” Listen to the playlist below.
