RZA responds to Azealia Banks and Russell Crowe altercation

The rapper has refuted Banks’ claims, and the ‘212’ hitmaker says he’s ‘gaslighting’ her

RZA has spoken out about the incident involving Azealia Banks and Russell Crowe, after Banks claimed Crowe assaulted and forcefully ejected her from his hotel room.

Writing on Facebook, the Wu-Tang Clan member described Banks as “erratic” and “obnoxious”, for which he was “a little embarrassed” because she was his guest to Crowe’s party in his Beverley Hills suite. He claims Banks verbally abused guests and threatened to cut one with a glass. RZA relates that Crowe blocked the attack and expelled her from the room.

Banks had claimed that Crowe used racial slurs towards her, and “choked me, threw me out and spat at me”, in a now-deleted Facebook post. She has since filed a charge for battery against the actor.

RZA and the “212” singer had worked together in his upcoming film Coco. “I heard the rumours of her problems in the industry but disregarded them with the rationality everyone is innocent until proven guilty,” he said. He related that he had given her support financially, with a trip to Los Angeles and a place to stay while he helped her get a record deal – though Banks had wrongfully posted about a supposed deal prematurely.

“THIS IS NOT A RACE OR GENDER ISSUE,” he added. “My art, talent and success speaks for it self and Azealia’s recent slander of me and self victimisation reflect’s the personality of the person that was in that room that night,” RZA wrote. “I have a wife, daughters, sisters and females on my staff so I protect women everyday. I pray none of them ever behave the way I witnessed Azealia Banks behaved that night.”

In a further interview with TMZ, RZA detailed the entire incident: he admitted that Crowe did indeed spit on Banks, but heard no racial slurs.

Banks has responded to RZA’s statement, claiming that the rapper is “gaslighting” her – a form of psychological abuse.

“Whatever pieces are left of his brain after years and years of smoking dust stupidly allowed him to ramble himself into incriminating his friend, and completely debunking their entire made up theory,” she wrote: “You mean to tell me, that a 300lb man needed to use all of that force, to remove an ‘erratic’ guest from a party?”

She detailed that her Uber timestamps show that she was at the party for a number of hours: “If I were supposedly erratic, how did I possibly end up spending that much time at your party.”

To conclude, she added: “If I were this supposed party monster, how the fuck did Russell find time to tweet a link to my song?”

In another interview with TMZ, Banks has stated that the record deal is no longer going ahead following the incident.
