The Book of Noodle is a series of videos that tells the story of Noodle, the band’s fictional guitarist. “She drifted away from Plastic Beach to safety, or so she thought. years later Noodle is face to face with pure evil ... Will she prevail? Read on. But be quick,” the band wrote on Instagram. The videos describe the aftermath of Noodle’s escape from Plastic Beach, with the humorous story (“finding a shapeshifter is like finding a beard at an Arcade Fire concert”) set to odd visuals and music that seems to play on stereotypes of ancient Japan. Earlier this year, Gorillaz revealed that they were working on new music for the first time in five years. Later, footage emerged of them in the studio, followed by news that De La Soul and Snoop Dogg had both recorded sessions for the album.
