David Bowie’s Blackstar has become an Instagram mini-series

The first of 16 short videos will be launched this Thursday, with Tavi Gevinson taking a lead role

David Bowie’s enigmatic final album, ★ (Blackstar), is reportedly being turned into an Instagram mini-series – with the first episode set to premiere this Thursday.

The 16 shorts, titled Unbound, have been kept firmly under wraps up to now, but were apparently signed off by the icon a few months before his death. According to a statement on the @Instaminiseries account, they aim to show new “visual interpretations” of the album, and hope to take viewers “on a journey of evocative images inspired by the moods suggested in the album’s music, lyrics and artwork.”

“Each episode of the series is sure to capture the imaginations of all who experience it and will undoubtedly lead to endless speculation and discussion of meaning, metaphor and intention,” revealed the caption. “We are honored to have had this opportunity.”

The series is set to star Rookies Tavi Gevinson, who will lead as the “protagonist”, as well as Six Feet Under actress Patricia Clarkson. Episodes will apparently be posted every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. “David Bowie was a trailblazer, not just in the world of music, but in the art of storytelling," added Unbound writer and producer Carolynn Cecilia in a statement. “Whether through lyrics, melodies, film, theater or mythical persona he never fails to transcend WHAT WAS and set the tone – and the bar – for what CAN BE. As storytellers and music lovers, who better for us to be inspired by than David Bowie?”
