Sure, garage classic “Re-Rewind” was as much of an early-00s fixture as a warm bottle of WKD, and “7 Days” was the school disco soundtrack for an entire generation of British millennials, but was he always this watertight? If new Big Narstie collab “When the Bassline Drops” is anything to go by, David’s always possessed genuine talent, it’s just taken a heady dose of garage nostalgia for us to catch up properly, with a slew of this generation’s grime kings behind him. Add his latest freestyle video (below) into the mix, and the Craig David revival has never looked so serious. Last week, we reported that a Craig David / Drake mixtape might actually be happening after the 00’s R&B icon claimed that a collaboration between the pair was “easily” a possibility, and that Drake was well up for it. Following on from that, David made a recent appearance on Capital FM where he freestyled over a mix including Drake’s “Hotline Bling”. But while his “Hotline Bling” rework is fun, it’s the bars he spits over Stormzy’s “Shut Up” that showcases his insane, volcanic lyrical ability.
