It’s easy to forget the dubious origins of Wikipedia. Instead of being regularly updated by a warehouse packed full of experts on Aerodynamics and Lemuria, the online encyclopedia is actually just run by anyone who feels like it. This means that any information you see on there has a pretty solid chance of being a lie.

One man – or “legend” – decided to make the most of this flaw. After editing Peking Duk’s Wikipedia page during one of their live shows in Melbourne, fan David Spargo managed to fool security into letting him backstage.

“It was probably the most genius, mastermind move that I’ve ever witnessed,” explained Adam Hyde, one half of the electro duo. “It’s crazy. He just did it on the spot, in a second on his phone. He told the security guard he was our stepbrother or something, and showed them the Wikipedia page and his ID.”

Spargo stealthily added himself to the band’s “Family” section, listing himself as a step-brother to band member Reuben Styles. Once inside, though, he was quick to reveal his true identity.

“We ended up having a bunch of beers with him and he was an absolute legend,” Hyde told The Guardian. “He wasn’t a creep or anything. He was like the most normal dude we’ve ever met. That’s what makes it more hilarious.”

Mental Health practitioner Spargo was shocked that his ingenius plan actually managed to work, claiming that he “definitely” didn’t think it would. “Peking Duk’s set finished and I was about to head home, then I just had a lightbulb-above-the-head kind of moment and thought, yeah, I’ll give it a crack. No harm in trying, is there?”

Spargo’s status as stepbrother remained on the page until Thursday, alongside an added “Legend” title. “We might end up having a couple of beers with him,” added Hyde. “I’ve got to tip my hat to that guy’s kahunas.”

“He’s probably still drinking, the dirty dog. That, or trying to infiltrate someone else’s green room.”
