“You can’t really talk about being 20 without mentioning student loans,” laughs producer John Howes. “I was in the last year before things got a bit stricter.” Howes’ 2013 has been “pretty tame” so far – he’s spent it working on his eclectic, hiss-covered techno, which he claims draws as much from afrobeat as 90s electronic experiments. “The whole of the early 90s UK sound is appealing to me. 

It was a pretty strong time for bedroom electronica and that lives on today.” His debut is the catchily titled “TD-W700/LEAZES”, a 12” released on Melodic this month. “Twenty is a weird age because you’re too old to call yourself a kid but not old enough to really have your shit together,” he says. “That’s a really good thing though. It makes you feel quite invincible."
