On Saturday, the United States reaches its semiquincentennial under a rare astrological pressure point: still reckoning with the aftershocks of its first Pluto return, and entering the long arc of its third Uranus return.

Occurring roughly every 248 years, Pluto’s orbit is associated in astrology with cycles of power: how it is accumulated, protected, exposed and ultimately transformed. The US Pluto return was exact in 2022, but its symbolism has continued to feel uncomfortably live as Pluto completed its passage through Capricorn, the sign associated with institutions, governance and hierarchy. For a nation whose founding chart places Pluto in Capricorn, the transit pointed directly at the architecture of American life: its economic systems, political hierarchies and strained social contracts.

That pressure is now compounded by Uranus in Gemini. Uranus first entered Gemini in 2025, then re-entered the sign in April 2026, beginning a longer transit through the sign associated with language, information, media and exchange. The US is also entering its third Uranus return, a cycle astrologers associate with rupture, rebellion and redefinitions of freedom. If Pluto asks what must be dismantled, Uranus asks what can break open next.

The question is not simply whether America is changing, but how deeply – and at whose expense? As the country marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, its astrology mirrors a more earthly crisis. Here’s what you need to know.

SO WHAT IS AMERICA’S BIG THREE?

The natal birth chart of the United States of America at the time the Declaration of Independence was signed (July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia) makes America’s big three: Cancer Sun, Aquarius Moon, and Sagittarius rising.

THE US IS GOING THROUGH LOTS OF PLANETARY RETURNS. WHAT DO THEY ALL MEAN?

In astrology, a planet returns when it moves back to the same position it occupied at the moment of birth — or, in this case, the founding of the United States. This Fourth of July weekend, the US is undergoing its Mercury return, opening a new cycle around communication, thought and national storytelling. In the US natal chart, Mercury is retrograde in Cancer; this year, Mercury is also retrograde in Cancer, close to its natal position. This means that we may have a new understanding of the way we connect. Hopefully, it allows us to learn from past mistakes as a nation, since the planetary retrograde is a time for revising the status quo.

The aftershocks of Pluto’s return offer insight into where the country is headed. America is a country at odds with itself, with old systems failing and disappointing the masses. In astrological terms, that places the nation in the midst of growth and transformation. Since Pluto, now in Aquarius, is aspecting the Moon in the United States’ birth chart, the country is being pushed out of its comfort zone and into hard discussions about what it would mean to transcend. The caveat is that America has to start over and be better – not only as a nation, but to each other.

In the United States’ natal chart and in the sky right now, both Mars, the planet of war, and Uranus, the planet of rebellion, are in Gemini, placing the country in the midst of two other planetary returns. This suggests a period of agitation and indicates that the country has an opportunity to improve, but only if people advocate for what they want. Uranus’s stay in Gemini will last seven years, giving America time to reconsider what freedom means. Mars and Uranus align on July 4, setting the stage for drastic change in unprecedented times. Sparks may fly brighter than the fireworks, serving as the catalyst for an American overhaul.

WHY IS MID-JULY SO IMPORTANT?

Once Jupiter moved into Leo on June 30, it set the stage for a wider shift in the paradigm. In mid-July, particularly from July 19 to 21, several outer planets form a rare configuration known as the Barbault Basket, an aspect pattern astrologers associate with upheaval, political transition and collective resets.

Jupiter is the worldly philosopher, Pluto is transformative, Uranus is the rebel and Neptune is the idealist. Together, they rock the world. Throughout history, astrologers have linked the Barbault Basket to periods of revolution and political transition, from the civil rights movement in the 60s to the fall of the Berlin Wall in the 80s. In brief, this is not quiet astrology. It suggests a moment when social and political views can shift dramatically, and when the demand for freedom becomes harder to ignore.

ANYTHING ELSE TO KNOW?

On July 26, the North Node of Destiny, a cosmic point on the lunar axis, enters Aquarius and remains there until March 26, 2028. The North Node in America’s birth chart is in Leo, meaning the transit will activate its opposite sign. For the collective, this can reveal hidden tensions bubbling beneath the surface that need to be resolved. Historically, nodal oppositions are associated with turning points, moments when old patterns return so they can be confronted and transformed. This year, Jupiter’s activation of both nodal points could offer some protection against immense hardship, but it may also make the public antsy and more angry while waiting for situations to improve.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR AMERICANS?

The country may feel like it is in retrograde, but as these planets return to where they were at the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we have an opportunity to redefine the nation’s rules. Our country is changing, and people are hungry for developments that can materially improve their lives. Silence is no longer an option. This is a moment to stand up and fight for the rights people deserve – this time, on equal terms.
