Yesterday (May 22), the New York Times ran a full-page Planned Parenthood advertisement calling for support of the organisation’s lifesaving healthcare initiatives in response to threats from the Trump administration.
The ad reads: “I’m for Planned Parenthood. Because I’m for freedom. Because I’m for health care. Because I’m for you and me”. It was signed by 250 celebrities, including Addison Rae, Barbie Ferreira, Clairo, Harry Styles, Mikey Madison, Gracie Abrams, Olivia Rodrigo, Pedro Pascal, Phoebe Bridgers, Sofia Coppola, Stevie Nicks, Gloria Steinem, Laura Dern, Laverne Cox, Maggie Rogers, Megan Thee Stallion, Natasha Lyonne and many more.
The advertisement comes after the Trump administration cut tens of millions of dollars from Planned Parenthood chapters across the US last month. Politico reported that several Planned Parenthood chapters that receive money from the family planning program Title X were given notices that their funding is being “temporarily withheld”. The notice pointed to “possible violations” of federal civil rights law and President Trump’s executive orders – referencing Planned Parenthood’s mission statements and other public-facing messaging that highlight their “commitment to Black communities”, which goes against Trump’s anti-DEI bills and also stated the funding was being frozen due to the organisation’s willingness to serve undocumented immigrants.
