Last night was a movie. But not a very good one. We have a Labour government for the first time in 14 years, but it’s not really a cause for celebration. From Labour’s weak and shameful position on the war on Gaza, their blatant transphobia, steadfast belief in carcerality and punishment, anti-migrant policies, commitment to continued austerity, and so much more, we essentially have a right-wing Labour government in power when we so desperately need of radical change to transform the material conditions of our lives.

It’s all so confusing and weird. But we did have some good news last night. While the exit polls suggested that Jeremy Corbyn would lose his seat in Islington North, he beat the Labour candidate Praful Nargund by over 7,000 votes. He wasn’t the only independent candidate to win last night, with four other pro-Palestine independent candidates ousting Labour MPs from their seats. Additionally, 20 Tory MPs lost their seats last night, including Liz Truss, making her the first former prime minister to have lost their seat in more than 100 years.

In his letter to his constituents, Corbyn importantly noted that “tonight, we celebrate, tomorrow we organise”. Our political engagement can not start and stop at voting. We must hold Labour accountable and organise within our communities. Politicians and political parties are fickle; all we have is each other.

Despite the bittersweet night, the British public made the best out of a bad situation and meme’d the entire evening.

Here’s a selection of the best memes that circulated on the internet last night:
