Books to read in August while the dream of summer slowly dies

LA’s renowned lesbian dominatrix Chris Belcher shares her tell-all memoir, while Henry Hoke takes us inside the mind of a queer mountain lion – here are the best new releases of the next month

It’s August, and – if you’re in the UK and looking out of a window – apparently the end of summer. The dream is dead. But while our days may be overshadowed by bleak drizzle and shock rainstorms, there’s at least a transportive new collection of books to escape into. From last month, there’s Eliza Clark’s disturbing true-crime satire Penance, Henry Hoke’s fever dream fable Open Throat, and Megan Nolan’s long-awaited second novel, Ordinary Human Failings. But it’s not all fiction: Ed Gillett’s ambitious new book Party Lines is a deep dive into the sociopolitical history of UK dance music (read our interview with him here), while James Edson’s Rabbit Hole is a loving photographic tribute to London’s skate scene (his interview is here).
