“What I like about Harper is that she’s not your typical Black girl on screen,” Myha’la tells Laura Pitcher in her Dazed cover story. “She’s not a perfect woman or business person. She is not [idealised] in any way.”

We’ve all come to know and love Myha’la’s performance as Harper in the hit HBO show Industry, which will be coming to an end in its next season. But she is more than the stone-cold financier that is Harper – over the last few years, she’s played a journalist, a documentary maker and a woman ensnared in a cult. Below, we share some of our favourite on-screen moments from the 30-year-old actress.

BODIES BODIES BODIES

“Your parents are upper 👏middle 👏 class,” is a line my friends and I say to each other more times than I’d like to admit. I was first introduced to Myha’la through Halina Reijn’s Bodies Bodies Bodies, the comedy-horror with a star-studded cast: Amandla Stenberg, Chase Sui Wonders, Rachel Sennott, Lee Pace, Pete Davidson, and Maria Bakalova. It follows a group of friends who have a house party during a hurricane. They decide to play a murder in the dark-style game called Bodies Bodies Bodies, and things go terribly wrong, as people start dying and they quickly turn on each other in their effort to find the culprit. It is a fun and ridiculously accurate depiction of Gen-Z and the TikTok-obsessed. Myha’la plays Jordan – who, if you’ve not seen it, is super mean, but also perfect. If you’re confused, give it a watch! (HJ)

BLACK MIRROR

Myha’la stars in this fan-favourite episode of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror. A highlight of season six, Loch Henry follows couple Davis (Samuel Blenkin) and Pia (Myha’la) as they attempt to make a true-crime documentary in Davis’ Scottish hometown. The contents of this episode are particularly dark, as it explores the effects of true-crime media and its increasing popularity, on the people and communities already scarred by violence. (HJ)

THEY WILL KILL YOU

They Will Kill You is a blood-soaked action-horror about a young woman, Asia Reaves (Zazie Beetz) looking for her missing sister, Maria (Myha’la). Asia takes a job as a live-in maid in a New York high-rise, where she discovers the terrible secret of its tenants and staff (spoiler alert: they are all part of an ultra-wealthy, demonic death cult.) As Asia struggles to survive the night, Maria is forced to make a choice between the promise of immortality and loyalty to her sister. (RD)

LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND

Directed by Sam Esmail, Leave the World Behind begins with a family looking to spend some quality time during a weekend getaway at a luxurious Long Island vacation rental. A large-scale cyberattack renders modern technology basically useless, leaving them stranded at the rental. The owners, George H. Scott (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter, Ruth (Myha’la), arrive at the house, seeking shelter. Ruth acts as the audience’s voice, questioning the choices made by the adults around her as events spiral out of control. (RD)

DEAD MAN’S WIRE

Set in 1977 and based on a real hostage crisis, Gus Van Sant’s action thriller is about an irritable real-estate developer, Tony Kiritsis (Bill Skarsgård), who kidnaps mortgage broker Richard Hall (Dacre Montgomery), leading to a days-long standoff. Myha’la plays TV reporter Linda Page, whose determination to land her first big scoop inspires some questionable ethical choices. It’s a thrilling and suspenseful watch – and in an interesting touch, Myha’la’s performance is loosely inspired by the activist and author Angela Davis. (RD)
