David Lynch’s family has called on fans of the acclaimed director to celebrate his life by joining in a “worldwide group meditation” at midday PST today (January 20).

“David Lynch, our beloved dad, was a guiding light of creativity, love, and peace. On Monday, January 20th — what would have been his 79th birthday — we invite you all to join us in a worldwide group meditation at 12:00pm NOON PST for 10 minutes,” reads a message posted to David Lynch’s official X account.

“Let us come together, wherever we are, to honor his legacy by spreading peace and love across the world. Please take this time to meditate, reflect, and send positivity into the universe,” it continues. “Thank you for being part of this celebration of his life.” The post is signed by “Jennifer, Austin, Riley and Lula Lynch”.

The 10-minute session will likely overlap with Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Lynch was a longtime believer in the power of Transcendental Meditation and meditated twice daily from 1973 until his death. He wrote at length about the benefits of Transcendental Meditation in the New Statesman in 2013: “Every human being has consciousness but not every human being has the same amount. The good news is, every human being has the potential for infinite consciousness. [...] The full potential of the human being is called enlightenment – infinite consciousness, infinite happiness, total fulfilment. Totality.”

Tributes have poured in following Lynch’s death last week at the age of 78. Actor Kyle MacLachan wrote on Instagram: “Forty-two years ago, for reasons beyond my comprehension, David Lynch plucked me out of obscurity to star in his first and last big budget movie. He clearly saw something in me that even I didn’t recognize. I owe my entire career, and life really, to his vision.  What I saw in him was an enigmatic and intuitive man with a creative ocean bursting forth inside of him. He was in touch with something the rest of us wish we could get to.” Mulholland Drive actress Naomi Watts wrote: “It wasn’t just his art that impacted me – his wisdom, humor, and love gave me a special sense of belief in myself I’d never accessed before.”
