Now, though, it’s a whole new year, and you know what that means! Yes, Dazed’s collaboration with the acclaimed film distributor and streaming service is back once again, with a spring season set to include Rodrigo Moreno’s The Delinquents and Ben Mullinkosson’s coming-of-age documentary The Last Year of Darkness. First, though, comes the very first screening of 2024, High & Low - John Galliano. Directed by Kevin Macdonald – the Academy Award-winning director of Touching the Void, Marley, and Whitney – the documentary follows the legendary fashion designer’s private life and career across several decades. This, of course, includes his time at the top of the fashion industry in the 90s and 2000s, which earned him the reputation as one of the world’s most innovative and influential designers. True to its name, however, High & Low - John Galliano also charts the abrupt and infamous decline of Galliano’s career in 2011, following the surfacing of a video that showed an anti-semitic and racist outburst in Paris, which resulted in him being fired from his role as creative director at Dior. Alongside this controversy, Macdonald’s documentary candidly explores the designer’s struggles with addiction and industry pressure. Across both Galliano’s life and work, insights are provided through interviews with the likes of Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Penelope Cruz, Charlize Theron, Anna Wintour, and Edward Enninful. Dazed x MUBI Cinema Club will host a screening of High & Low - John Galliano at London’s Rio Cinema on February 27, featuring an in-person Q&A with the director Kevin Macdonald. Sound good?
