There’s A24’s bisexual bodybuilder film Love Lies Bleeding which has been described as “Pain & Gain for indie lesbians” in which she portrays the protective lover of an aspiring bodybuilder. There’s her upcoming feature directorial debut, The Chronology of Water, adapted from novelist Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir and starring Imogen Poots. And now, Stewart has revealed that she is writing a stoner girl comedy with her fiancé Dylan Meyer that is, as she puts it, “really fucking stupid.” The low-key announcement came during a chat with Rachel Sennott for Interview magazine. Having just split an edible with Meyer, Stewart’s conversation meanders from microdosing mushrooms to whether or not Sennott is actually an “alien” – which is decided by whether she is easily embarrassed. “Everyone that I know that was raised in the American Pie era is steeped in shame and obsessed with hair removal,” Stewart explains. At one point, she randomly interrupts Sennott to ask “do you like texting?” and, as any good lesbian would, she checks what star sign she is (Virgo, it turns out). Amidst all that, the two also get to discuss their respective projects, including Love Lies Bleeding, which Sennott calls a “perfect example of a messy, twisted lesbian”, and Stewart’s new “stoner girl” comedy. “Me and Dylan are writing a movie. It’s a stoner girl comedy, and it’s really fucking stupid. I think you’ll like it,” she tells Sennott. While she doesn’t reveal many more details specifically, Stewart does say that she is scared of “anything big lately” because of the hierarchies which make her uncomfortable. “This is the most clichéd, rote, expected, and completely genuine thing, but I just want to make a Cassavetes movie. I want my first movie to be a student film, even if it takes three years. I’m also not going to make a movie for more than $5 million, because it makes me uncomfortable and they usually suck. But getting people to agree to do that is so hard,” she says. Also discussed is Bottoms, the movie Sennott co-wrote with her Shiva Baby director Emma Seligman which premiered at SXSW and recently released its trailer. Describing the plot to Stewart, she says that it’s “literally girls beating the shit out of each other” and loving it. Alongside her co-star, Ayo Edebiri, the two play high school friends who lean into a rumour that they went to juvie over the summer by starting a female fight club. “It’s sort of starting this fake female empowerment thing and our characters are benefiting from it, which is something that people do in real life,” she explains, to which Stewart perfectly replies: “Baby Tár.” While we wait for more news about what is sure to be this generation’s Smiley Face, enjoy the trailer for Bottoms below.
