Attention cool cats and kittens: Tiger King 2 is coming to Netflix

Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin will return in the sequel to the true crime series

Netflix has officially confirmed that a sequel to its wild lockdown hit Tiger King is set to arrive by the end of the year. And yes, both Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin will be making an appearance.

Unveiled by the streaming service as part of a promotional video for its upcoming slate of true crime content, Tiger King 2 promises “more madness and mayhem”, according to the Hollywood Reporter. A new series of the show has been rumoured since the original aired back in March 2020, but its production has largely been kept under wraps.

In the new teaser, we see zookeeper and problematic style icon Joe Exotic phoning in from behind bars, where he’s serving a 22-year sentence (his mullet is still mercifully intact, if no longer peroxide blonde), while his nemesis, Carole Baskin, struts down a hallway in animal print.

Baskin, however, isn’t actually on board with the new series, due to her apparent misrepresentation in the original. “I don’t know how they put out a Tiger King 2 when Joe Schreibvogel (AKA Joe Exotic) is in jail and I’m refusing to be played again,” she says in a statement on its announcement. “Rebecca Chaiklin (co-director of Tiger King) said she wanted to ‘clear the air’ about what they did to me in Tiger King. I told her to lose my number. There is no explanation for such a betrayal and false portrayal.”

Of course, our brief but widespread obsession with Tiger King didn’t only spawn a sequel: a drama miniseries based on the big cat tale is also in production at Peacock, starring Kate McKinnon and John Cameron Mitchell. In July, Kyle MacLachlan also joined the cast as Baskin’s husband, Howard.

Other true crime titles revealed in the recent Netflix announcement include The Tinder Swindler, Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King, Bad Vegan, and The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Conman.
