Here’s a new look at Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana

The Pablo Larraín-directed biopic, Spencer, has entered the ‘final stretch’ of filming and is set to arrive later this year

Earlier this year we got a first look at Pablo Larraín’s Princess Diana biopic, Spencer, in a teaser image showing a virtually unrecognisable Kristen Stewart as the late Princess of Wales. Now, as the project moves from Germany to the UK for its “final stretch” of filming, another image of Stewart’s Diana has been released.

The new image offers a slightly different look at the young royal, swapping the first picture’s pensive gaze out of a window in stately surroundings, for a head-on, captivating pose. It also showcases a replica of the sizeable sapphire engagement ring given to Diana by Charles (who will be played by Jack Farthing, according to a recent casting announcement).

Written by Steven Knight, shot by Claire Mathon (the cinematographer behind Atlantics and Portrait of a Lady on Fire), and scored by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, Spencer will revolve around three pivotal days in Diana’s marriage, over a single weekend.

“December, 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage has long since grown cold,” reads the official synopsis from Neon. “Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.”

Last year, Stewart spoke about her emotional connection to the people’s princess, saying that she remains “viscerally affected” by images of the her funeral, which she watched as a child. “It’s one of the saddest stories to exist ever,” she said. “And I don’t want to just play Diana – I want to know her implicitly.”

Dazed previously listed some of the iconic Princess Di looks that we’d like to see make an appearance in the film, which taps Little Women alum Jacqueline Durran as costume designer.

Spencer is currently scheduled to release in late 2021. Take a look at the new image of Kristen Stewart’s Diana below.
