After his spectacular fall from grace his legal team are now scrambling to deal with the wealth of sexual harassment and abuse claims levelled against him and they’re dealing with them badly. Last month to refute Rose McGowan’s accusations, his lawyer used an email from Ben Affleck as proof he could not have raped the actress. “She never told me nor did I ever infer that she was attacked by anyone,” Affleck wrote. However, an email from someone who wasn’t there at the time the alleged attack happened only prove that they didn’t know – not that it didn’t happen. True to form, this week the movie mogul’s team asked the court to throw out the cases brought against him by several women who allege inappropriate behaviour ranging from requests to see or touch their breasts to chasing one woman while naked. His lawyer’s used favourable quotes from female stars that hadn’t complained about Weinstein’s behaviour to support their argument. “Such women would include, presumably, Jennifer Lawrence, who told Oprah Winfrey she had known Weinstein since she was 20 years old and said ‘he had only ever been nice to me,’ and Meryl Streep, who stated publicly that Weinstein had always been respectful to her in their working relationship.” Streep objected to her name and experience being used to silence other women. In a statement she wrote: “Harvey Weinstein’s attorneys use of my (true) statement – that he was not sexually transgressive or physically abusive in our business relationship – as evidence that he was not abusive with many OTHER women is pathetic and exploitive”. “The criminal actions he is accused of conducting on the bodies of these women are his responsibility, and if there is any justice left in the system he will pay for them — regardless of how many good movies, made by many good people, Harvey was lucky enough to have acquired or financed,” it continued. Lawrence then released her own statement which read: “Harvey Weinstein and his company are continuing to do what they have always done, which is to take things out of context and use them for their own benefit. This is what predators do, and it must stop.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Weinstein has now apologised via a representative who said: “Moving forward, Mr. Weinstein has advised his counsel to not include specific names of former associates; and to avoid whenever possible, even if they are in the public record.” While Weinstein is clearly running out of names that are willing to defend him, here’s a long list of names of women who have accused him of misconduct.
