For the first time since its launch in 1997, MM6 Maison Martin Margiela introduce a capsule collection with New York retail favourite, Opening Ceremony for A/W11.
It might initially come off as a slightly odd pairing - Maison Martin Margiela's own lower priced line MM6 coupled with Opening Ceremony, a tastemaking destination shop with a wildly successful in-house label of its own. At the presentation of this collaborative capsule collection between MM6 and Opening Ceremony though, the synergy was clear. Margiela and MM6's DNA filters through loud and clear but is coupled with Opening Ceremony's feeling of accessibility and persuasive knack of making everything look 'cool'. As guests flicked through the racks and models flitted in and out showing off a few key pieces, a video was being projected onto the wall depicting models with their faces obscured showing the off the functionality of each piece - not an easy feat considering there's a pair of denim elasticated leg warmers/chaps hybrid in amongst the collection.
As with any Margiela creative expression, ideas of recuperation, transformation and reinterepretation are at the very foundations of this intriguing collaboration. Based on a three-in-one concept, pieces throughout the collection can be transformed so that the wearer can style them a myriad of different ways. Taking its inspiration from the construction of a jacket with detachable lining, this core characteristic broadens the collection from over twenty originalcstyles in to a plethora of additional silhouettes and options. The playful and functional elements that are consistent throughout this line of women's apparel and accessories mirror the design concept behind the MM6 line in creating subtle, everyday clothing with the added intellectual qualities that Marigela is renowned for.
In line with the collective spirit of the Maison, this A/W11 capsule of apparel and accessories will launch globally in September 2011 at Opening Ceremony retail locations and select Maison Martin Margiela partners globally.
