At the beginning of 2026, traders at one of London’s most beloved markets were hit with an eviction notice. Dalston’s Ridley Road market has existed since the late 1880s and is now home to over 150 stalls, selling produce from around the world, with a focus on Afro-Caribbean, Asian and Turkish goods.

In February, 13 traders from the indoor section of the market were issued eviction notices, requiring them to leave the premises by the end of March. According to The Londoner, this was due to a crackdown from the Met Police following reports of anti-social behaviour. As the end of March rolled around, traders joined forces with the London Renters Union and Save Ridley Road campaigners, who staged a protest which blocked private security from shutting the building. It was a big win for the market, following an hour-long standoff between protesters and security personnel.

Sadly, this isn’t the first time Ridley Road has come under threat. Locals have had to step in previously, saving the market with mass campaigns in 2018, and prompting Hackney Council to take on a 15-year lease in 2022. However, four years on, the council is yet to take over the lease, meaning the future of the market remains uncertain.

In light of this, activist and fashion designer Katharine Hamnett has designed a protest t-shirt in support of the market. Working in collaboration with Save Ridley Road, the t-shirt reads “It Takes A Village”, with all proceeds going towards funding the legal fees of the traders still facing eviction. Of course, Hamnett is a legend in the world of protest tees, having previously used fashion to protest genocide and support the people of Gaza – although it’s her “Choose Life” t-shirt, designed in 1983, that is arguably her most famous.
