It’s been almost six months since Duran Lantink presented his disruptive debut for Jean Paul Gaultier. Before then, the Dutch designer had been tasked with reviving a ready-to-wear line that had lain dormant for almost 11 years, and last October – during the historic season of the designer debut – Lantink gathered fashion’s press in an industrial basement corridor to witness his new vision for the brand.

On the runway, Lantink took the well-known symbols of JPG – the marinière stripe, sailor hats, trompe-l’œil, conical bras – and spliced them with his own absurdist style, resulting in a collection full of whacky shapes, suggestive cutouts and one very lifelike depiction of a penis. The reaction was intensely divided, and though Lantink himself said in an interview that he was surprised by the scale of the response, it surely secured him as the true heir to Gaultier. The collection was called Junior – a suggestion that Lantink is fashion's new enfant terrible?

Whether you like it or not, Lantink’s debut will go down in history, and today (March 25) the designer finally immortalises that collection with the drop of his first-ever Jean Paul Gaultier campaign. Revealed exclusively on Dazed Fashion, the campaign features returning model Leon Dame, who slips back into the high-cut leather leotard he wore for the show – plus a whole cast of quirky characters in Lantink’s directional clothes. Shot by iconic fashion duo Inez & Vinoodh, the images were inspired by the late 1980s, perfectly channelling the energy of OG Gaultier in the big hair and bold silhouettes.

“The idea of the campaign was to celebrate silhouettes and the freedom of nightlife, movement, energy, and pure fun,” Lantink told us when we asked him about the campaign. “Echoing the Junior Gaultier line, that rowdy, youthful, club-soaked spirit.”
