Last season at Berlin Fashion Week, you couldn’t move for fear of breaking out into a pouring sweat. Though the actual catwalks were always air-conditioned, the temperatures outside were exceeding 40°C, one of Berlin’s hottest weeks on record. This time around, things were markedly different, as the city plunged to the depths of -9°C. Icy pavements and snow-strewn stairs transformed Berlin into an obstacle course for all attending this season’s runways – but, neither rain, shine or the freezing cold can stop a laser-focused fashion person from attending a fashion show.

Because of the adverse conditions, this season’s street style responded accordingly, with many people reaching for whatever would keep them the warmest. Iconic Berghain bouncer Sven went for a thick shearling jacket paired with camo trousers and snakeskin boots, while others went for floor-sweeping overcoats and furry bucket hats, while more swaddled themselves in fur – both faux and vintage – in attempts to retain some heat.

But while the name of the game was to keep out the cold, that didn’t mean the city’s famous edginess was nowhere to be found. Fur snoods were paired with beaten-up, industrial workwear, leopard print accessories were wrapped around showgoers necks, while some coats were cracked open to reveal lace mesh or see-through bodysuits underneath. Never change, Berlin.
