Kylian Mbappé is Jonathan Anderson’s first official Dior boy

Ahead of his debut on Friday, June 27, Jonathan Anderson has just revealed some new images of house ambassador and Dior menswear muse, French football star Kylian Mbappé.

Writing on his personal Instagram account this morning, the Irish designer revealed why the footballer is the perfect muse for the house, a departure from the actors and musicians that fronted Loewe’s campaigns. “Kylian Mbappé is the voice of a generation and an inspiration to many people in the world of sport and beyond,” said Anderson. “These films show the charm and charisma that make him the perfect ambassador for this house.” Mbappé was first signed on as a Dior global ambassador in December 2021, so this new campaign is likely a continuation of that contract.

The films that Anderson was referring to in his post, however, are a series of short, blink-and-you’ll-miss-them videos of Mbappé getting ready for the upcoming show, and our first look at what Anderson’s Dior will look like. In the first image, the footballer wears a grey, mottled blazer, red and navy striped tie and a blue striped shirt (very similar to the shirt Anderson posted when he first announced his position at Dior). In the second, Mbappé is decked out in his finest, doing up the bowtie of his sharp, black tuxedo.

Before today’s teaser, we’ve had a couple of indications of what the vibe of Anderson’s Dior might be like, but these are the first actual clothes that we’ve seen from the house. At the weekend, the Dior Instagram page posted some moodboard images of Anderson’s on its Close Friends grid, which included an image of Jean-Michel Basquiat, American socialite Lee Radziwill and some product shots of Dior totes. One bag was printed with a yellow and red Dracula by Bram Stoker book cover (maybe a nod to Stoker and Anderson’s shared Irish heritage) while another featured the French cover of Dangerous Liaisons, which was banned due to its “immoral” nature when first released in 1782. Maybe Anderson’s new Dior is set to scandalise the world when all is revealed this Friday? There’s only one way to find out…
