From Rihanna in Alaïa, A$AP Rocky in Miu Miu and Charli xcx in Saint Laurent, this year’s festival provided an almost unusual wealth of fashion hits

Despite the fact that Cannes is known as much for fashion as it is for its movies, the festival’s 2025 edition still provided an almost unusual wealth of red carpet moments. A newly instated dress code banning “voluminous trains” and “nude dresses” meant that celebrities had to find other ways to grab some attention, and boy did they try. Last week, things got off to a strong start when Kristen Stewart skirted the rules in a sheer Chanel skirt (with boy shorts underneath), Bella Hadid went for a demure Saint Laurent column (after last year’s naked dress practically inspired the new rules), and Alexander Skarsgård went full on leather daddy in thigh-high YSL waders. Elsewhere, surprising standouts came from Irina Shayk in her own vintage YSL gown, and Barbie actor Ariana Greenblatt, who wore a Chanel corset originally modelled by Claudia Schiffer on the SS93 catwalk.

The following week, things seemed to ramp up a notch, if that could even be possible. The reigning couple of the red carpet (Rocky and Rih) caused a flashbulb firestorm at Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest premiere, with A$AP Rocky in sleek Saint Laurent and Rihanna in custom Alaïa; house ambassador Isabelle Huppert rocked a trio of Balenciaga looks across the festival, proving that she’s still the coolest woman on the carpet; former Victoria Secret Angel Elsa Hosk wore archival Thierry Mugler, styling the look exactly the same as Claudia Schiffer wore it on the AW95 runway; and former TV lovers Paul Mescal and Daisy-Edgar Jones both looked faultless in their separate Gucci looks.
