Just when I think I’ve written my last 300-word filler piece about Julia Fox’s clothes, she pulls me right back in again! Try as they might, they could never make me hate her – and this really stupid outfit is yet more proof that literally no one is doing it like Miss Fox.

Yesterday, the actor, It-girl and entrepreneur hit the sidewalk outside her apartment with a flip phone strapped to her breasts (obviously), and a CD Walkman compact mirror dangling from her wrist. The new millennium boob tube had been layered over another flesh-coloured bandeau, probably due to its diminutive size, while Fox completed the look with a flesh-toned mini skirt and leggings, flesh-toned mesh sleeves, and bayonetta glasses of the office siren variety. Some of you may turn your nose up at this and ask why – but I counter that with a why not! In an entirely self-serious and often humourless industry, the contrivance of Fox’s looks are both charming and entertaining, and you’d miss them if they were gone.

And though there’s quite clearly a current of unseriousness running through most of Fox’s outfits, this one’s for a good cause actually. “Did you know that e-waste is the largest growing waste stream, beating fast fashion?” the actor asked on Instagram, next to the photograph. She then goes on to outline how Back Market, the refurbished smartphone and electronics company, has teamed up with Canadian visual artist Gab Bois for the very pieces she is wearing. Cannily titled F/W 2005 (in place of our upcoming AW25 season) the collection features Fox’s flip phone which is actually a belt that’s she’s fashioned into a boob tube (her mind), the Walkman compact, a digital camera made into a coin purse, three stacked webcams made into a candleholder, and a balaclava knitted from old wired headphones.

“Every purchase helps support the Right to Repair movement in both the US and EU, a cause that passionately defends the fundamental right of consumers to repair and restore their own electronics,” continued Fox on the post. “It’s a step toward a future where empowerment, sustainability, and access to repair are within everyone’s reach.” So it wasn’t just a silly outfit after all – it was a silly outfit with a message! Our iPhones are designed with planned obsolescence at their core, and Julia Fox is fighting that pernicious practice, one belt-sized boob tube at a time.
