Cindy Sherman’s relationship with fashion is long and storied, with the revered artist first taking an interest in dressing up as a kid when her great-grandmother gave her a pile of vintage clothes from the 1920s. Since then, Sherman has used clothing to help her shapeshift into the various alter-egos that define her work, scouring secondhand stores and thrift hotspots to expand her eclectic dressing-up box.

Throughout her career, Sherman has also explored fashion within her art, examining how the industry depicts women in her 1970s series Cover Girls, and later as part of her Fashion project. Beyond this, the artist has also linked up with a succession of luxury fashion houses to create campaigns and capsule collections, with Balenciaga, Comme des Garçons, Marc Jacobs, Undercover, Supreme, and Louis Vuitton among them. More recently, Sherman starred in Jacobs' SS24 campaign alongside FKA twigs, Juergen Teller, and Bladee

Now, as part of a star-studded auction to celebrate ten years of luxury vintage fashion retailer Resee, Sherman has dug into her wardrobe and pulled out a show-stopping dress that will open up for bids on April 30. The gown in question is a black and white sequined number with long sleeves and a full circle skirt, taken from Marc Jacobs’ SS13 collection, and is estimated to go for around $800 to $1,000, which seems pretty reasonable for such a juicy slice of fashion and art history. However, chances are it will end up selling for a lot more, so bidders may have to dig deep.

Also on the line-up within the auction is a 1991 leopard Alaïa coat that comes courtesy of Kim Kardashian, a prim Chanel suit from the 90s that belonged to Naomi Campbell, an AW97 embroidered McQueen mini from the depths of Gillian Anderson’s closet, and Belle De Jour legend Catherine Deneuve’s knockout 1970s Saint Laurent cord coat complete with flouncy Leg of Mutton Sleeve.
